Nestled in the heart of the Mile End, a dynamic and ever-evolving neighbourhood, this project aimed to refresh the existing Desjardins Service Center’s vision to make it more friendly and accessible. To achieve this goal, the old space was renovated in its entirety.

With the addition of a wooden ribbon, this project embodies the qualities that make the Mile End uniquely culturally rich – a design that is as symbolic as it is functional.

On the building’s exterior, the ribbon establishes a direct link between the institution and the neighbourhood, extending beyond the curtain wall to highlight the entranceway and encourage passersby to step inside. In the welcome area, an illuminated wall depicting a neighbourhood scene guides the eye towards reception. The ribbon’s angular, asymmetrical geometry defines an open and dynamic space that reflects the Mile End’s identity.

Inside, the ribbon begins to unfold gracefully, organizing both offices and informal meeting spaces alike. The wood’s darker stain contrasts with the offices’ white interiors and facilitates the lecture of the formal language. This contrast play also creates unexpected spaces that mirror the fabric of the Caisse’s urban surroundings. Simple, elegant furniture rounds out the design, giving a nod to the folding of a ribbon. These pieces were custom-designed to perfectly suit their environment.
